Kindergeld (child benefit)
Kindergeld for a child over 18
For a child over 18 Kindergeld continues if there is a recognised reason. Those are: training or study, looking for a training place, voluntary service. A disability also counts if the child cannot look after itself because of it.
The application is the same as usual; in the child annex there is a section of its own for it.
Depending on the reason, Familienkasse calls for a supporting document — a certificate from the school, the firm or Agentur für Arbeit.
What you state in the child annex
You enter what the child is doing at present: school, study, training, voluntary service, a gap between two stages, or looking for a training place. For each case there is a field with a from-date and a to-date.
Sheets we do not yet fill in
Your case may call for two sheets that we do not yet fill in: the certificate that no training place was found (KG 11a), and the supporting document for a disability. If it affects you, we tell you so in the application — you get the sheets from Familienkasse.
Until when
As a rule until the 25th birthday. With a disability that arose before the 25th birthday it can go beyond that. Whether it does in your case is decided by Familienkasse, not by us.
What that costs
The price depends on how many children you are applying for Kindergeld for. The sample calculations are on the page about Kindergeld (child benefit).
