Requesting the tax ID of a person you represent
Anyone appointed by a court as a court-appointed legal representative, or acting as a guardian, can request the tax identification number of the person they represent.
Entitlement is evidenced by a copy of the court's Bestellungsurkunde (court certificate of appointment). No copy of an identity document is needed here.
The certificate must show that your remit covers the management of financial affairs or representation before public authorities.
Why the remit matters
Legal representation is not a power of attorney for everything. It applies only to the areas the court has laid down. If representation before public authorities is not among them, the Bundeszentralamt may not release the number — not even if you actually care for the person.
Where the reply goes
The information is sent to the registered address of the person represented, not to yours. This cannot be changed and is not a mistake by the office: as a rule the number is communicated only to where the person is registered.
A separate unit
Requests from court-appointed legal representatives are handled by a separate unit within the Bundeszentralamt. The correct address is already at the top of the finished letter — you do not have to look for it.
What that costs
The price is fixed. A request always concerns exactly one person, and the letter is always one sheet — there is nothing the extent could depend on. The sample calculations are on the page about Request tax ID.
